But in subsequent years, it has seen various revivals and productions around the world, including an off-Broadway production by the Roundabout Theatre Company in New York City earlier this year. If all goes well, Merrily We Roll Along should hit theaters sometime around 2040, assuming the Earth still exists then.

But in some ways, Merrily We Roll Along was just ahead of its time. Now that book revisions have been made and the storytelling structure is more widely understood, the musical is a widely beloved classic. One critic, Clive Barnes, even predicted as much back in 1981, writing, "It is far too good a musical to be judged by those twin kangaroo courts of word of mouth and critical consensus.

Adapted by George Furth from a play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, the musical is structured in reverse. We first meet Franklin Shepard Jonathan Groff in 1976, when he is a former composer now leading a hollow life as a producer of Hollywood schlock; successive scenes move backward through the twisting paths on which he has lost both his ideals and his erstwhile best pals, playwright Charley Daniel Radcliffe and writer Mary Lindsay Mendez. We meet the three friends at their worst—when Frank is a philandering sell-out, Charley is mired in bitterness and Mary is a mean, hopeless drunk—and must invest in them on faith. All three deliver exceptional work.

Will the director live long enough to finish it? The Broadway show, adapted from a 1934 play , follows three friends— composer Franklin Shepard, playwright Charley Kringas and novelist Mary Flynn—over two decades as their lives fracture and change. The musical plays out in reverse chronological order, meaning that the film will open with scenes shot around the 2040s.
At the 2023 Drama Desk Awards, at which the Off-Broadway mounting of this production competed, Groff and Mendez were both nominated in the Lead Performance category, whereas Radcliffe earned a bid for Featured Performance.
